Feminism. “Why is the word such an uncomfortable one?”
Emma Watson(@) delivered an influential speech at the United Nations Headquarters in 2014. Her speech spoke volumes for the HeForShe campaign. She exquisitely explained the gender inequality happening now and voiced the importance of men standing up for women.
She delved into the true meaning of feminism despite being advised to not use the term “feminism”. In an interview with the Evening Standard, she told them, “I was encouraged not to use the word feminism because people felt that it was alienating and separating and the whole idea of the speech was to include as many people as possible. But I thought long and hard and ultimately felt that it was just the right thing to do. If women are terrified to use the word, how on earth are men supposed to start using it?”
There shouldn’t be such a huge fear of feminism. And to quote Watson, “I am inviting you to step forward, to be seen to speak up, to be the “he” for “she”. And to ask yourself if not me, who? If not now, when?”
