Jessica Neuwirth – An Inspiration

Jessica Neuwirth, a “shy, elusive heroine”, is my inspiration for this March. After reading her book, Equal Means Equal: Why the Time for an Equal Rights Amendment is Now, I knew how important it is for me to join and fight the injustice that all women in America face. Of course, compared to the author that explored historical and contemporary women’s rights cases, I am an amateur.

Ms. Neuwirth, a graduate from Harvard and Yale, spent a decade mobilizing public pressure against rape, domestic violence and practices like female genital mutilation through letter-writing campaigns and news conferences, techniques she cribbed from her old haunt, Amnesty International. Years later, she became the president of an organization working to support passage and ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment called the ERA Coalition. In addition, she is the founder of Equality Now, which is an international human rights organization aiming to end violence and discrimination against women.

“Building a women’s movement is very powerful and it’s not something that these other groups are doing, by definition. If you are beaten to death in prison by a guard or you’re beaten to death in your home by your husband, the bottom line is, you’re still dead.”

Thank you Jessica Neuwirth for the support. I’m looking forward to working with Ms. Neuwirth for the passing of the ERA!
