Betty Ford, wife of President Gerald Ford, was one of the most famous first ladies in American history . Her many accomplishments before she became the First Lady included volunteer work with The Congressional Wives Club, the 81st Congress Club, as well as the National Federation of Republican Women. Before becoming president, her husband Gerald Ford served in congress for 25 years. He was a staunch supporter of his wife’s work for the empowerment of American Women.
As the First Lady of the United States, Ford was a prominent and open supporter of the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment written by Alice Paul and Crystal Eastman. The Amendment was passed with a 2/3rd majority by the House and Senate,in 1972, and then failed to get ratified three years later. I think it is time already, don’t you?!
As Betty Ford said: “The search for human freedom can never be complete without freedom for women.”
I respect and honor the tireless efforts of the women, such as Betty Ford, who came before me.
Please feel free to suggest other names I can circulate in my blog that are similarly inspiring.
