Rose McGowan has been fighting misogyny in Hollywood for years made headlines in 2014 for tweeting an image of a casting call she had received asking for actresses to wear tight clothes that accentuated their cleavage, followed by the caption “Casting note that came w/script I got today. For real. name of male star rhymes with Madam Panhandler hahahaha I die” She was fired shortly afterwards by her agent. Since then, McGowan has been very outspoken about the extreme mysogyny that comes with the territory of being an actress.
“It’s so crazy that this went through so many hands and didn’t get flagged as something inappropriate—it’s so status quo. It’s just dumb. Most jobs have a human resources department. In the entertainment industry, there’s no such thing. Just because I want to be a creator and an artist means I get to be abused? No thank you. You don’t get to do that to me.”
Last year she debuted her buzz cut, speaking to New York Magazine’s Bennett Marcus, she was quoted as saying:
“I actually had no moment of freak-out, I didn’t want to challenge myself, I just no longer wanted to be part of a club I didn’t want to be in. I no longer wanted to conform to Hollywood, or whatever I was supposed to be.”
McGowan is a force, she is outspoken, unapologetic and is a beacon for many of us to look up to in this continued fight for equality.
